Description

This Parisian-style hot chocolate (Chocolat Chaud) is rich, thick, and luxuriously creamy, just like the ones served in Parisian cafés. Made with real dark chocolate, whole milk, and a touch of cream, it’s the ultimate cozy indulgence for chilly days!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk (or half-and-half for extra richness)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional, for ultra-creamy texture)
  • 4 oz (113g) high-quality dark chocolate (at least 60-70% cocoa, finely chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt (enhances flavor)

For Garnish (Optional):

  • Whipped cream
  • Shaved chocolate or cocoa powder
  • A pinch of cinnamon

Instructions

1. Heat the Milk & Cream

  1. In a small saucepan, heat the milk and heavy cream over medium-low heat until warm (but not boiling).

2. Melt the Chocolate

  1. Add the chopped dark chocolate, whisking continuously until fully melted and smooth.

3. Sweeten & Thicken

  1. Stir in the sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.
  2. Continue whisking for 3-5 minutes, allowing the hot chocolate to thicken slightly. (For an extra thick Parisian-style texture, let it simmer for a few more minutes.)

4. Serve & Enjoy!

  1. Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream, shaved chocolate, or a sprinkle of cinnamon.
  2. Serve warm and enjoy with a croissant or biscotti for a true French café experience!

Notes

  • Extra thick? Simmer longer or add 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 teaspoons cold milk.
  • Sweeter? Add more sugar or use semi-sweet chocolate instead of dark.
  • Dairy-Free? Use oat milk or almond milk and coconut cream instead of heavy cream.
