Description

July Sugar Cookies are festive, buttery cookies decorated with red, white, and blue sprinkles or icing, making them a perfect sweet treat for patriotic celebrations like Independence Day.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)
  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles or decorating sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using); mix until combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Scoop tablespoon-sized balls of dough and roll them in patriotic sprinkles or decorating sugar.
  7. Place cookies 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets and flatten slightly with your hand or the bottom of a glass.
  8. Bake for 8–10 minutes or until edges are just beginning to brown.
  9. Let cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough for 30 minutes helps prevent spreading.
  • Use festive cookie cutters and royal icing for more decorative options.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
