- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
- Red and blue food coloring
- Patriotic sprinkles or sanding sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
- In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until fully combined.
- Divide dough into three portions. Leave one plain, color one red, and one blue using food coloring.
- Take small pieces of each colored dough and gently swirl together. Roll into balls and flatten slightly on the baking sheet.
- Decorate with patriotic sprinkles or sanding sugar.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
Notes
- Do not overbake to keep cookies soft and chewy.
- Chilling the dough for 30 minutes can help with shaping.
- Use gel food coloring for more vibrant hues without thinning the dough.
