Instructions
1. Prepare the Fries
- Peel and cut potatoes into thin fries. Soak in cold water for 30 minutes to remove excess starch. (Skip this step if using frozen fries.)
- Drain and pat dry. Toss with vegetable oil, salt, and pepper.
- Air Fryer Method: Cook at 400°F (200°C) for 15-18 minutes, shaking halfway.
- Oven Method: Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 30 minutes, flipping halfway.
- Frying Method: Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and fry in batches for 3-4 minutes, then drain on paper towels.
2. Caramelize the Onions
- Heat butter and oil in a pan over medium-low heat.
- Add onions and salt, stirring occasionally. Cook for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Stir in sugar (optional) and 1 tablespoon water to deglaze the pan. Set aside.
3. Make the Animal Style Sauce
- In a bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, mustard, vinegar, and sugar. Refrigerate until ready to use.
4. Assemble the Animal Style Fries
- Place hot fries on a serving plate.
- Melt cheese on top by microwaving for 30 seconds or placing under a broiler for 1 minute.
- Add caramelized onions and drizzle generously with Animal Style sauce.
5. Serve & Enjoy!
- Grab a fork and dig in! Serve immediately for the best texture.
