Description

Fluffy and soft homemade pita bread, perfect for stuffing with your favorite fillings or dipping in sauces and spreads.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups (300 g) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) warm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil, and stir to form a dough.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 250 °C (480 °F) and place a baking stone or baking sheet inside.
  6. Divide dough into 8 equal balls. Roll each ball into a 6-inch (15 cm) circle, about 1/8 inch thick.
  7. Place 1–2 pitas at a time on the hot baking surface and bake for 3–5 minutes until puffed and lightly golden.
  8. Remove from oven and cover with a clean towel to keep soft.
  9. Repeat with remaining dough.

Notes

  • Ensure the oven and baking surface are very hot for best puffing.
  • Use whole wheat flour for a nuttier flavor.
  • Pitas can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days or frozen for later use.
