- 3 cups frozen green peas
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder (optional)
Instructions
- Cook the frozen peas according to package directions or boil in a saucepan until tender, about 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, to form a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream until smooth.
- Cook, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder if using.
- Stir in the cooked peas and heat through, about 2 minutes.
- Serve warm as a side dish.
Notes
- For a richer sauce, use all heavy cream instead of milk.
- Fresh peas can be used if in season—boil until tender before adding.
- Add chopped cooked bacon or sautéed onions for extra flavor.
