Description

Tortitas de Papa are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and full of nostalgic flavor. Made with mashed potatoes, cheese, and seasonings, these Mexican-style potato patties are perfect as a main dish or side, often served with salsa, rice, or in a torta. They’re easy to make and incredibly comforting!

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon gold or russet), peeled and cubed

  • 1/2 cup crumbled queso fresco or shredded mozzarella (optional)

  • 1 egg

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (plus more for coating)

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Optional toppings or sides:

  • Salsa roja or verde

  • Shredded lettuce

  • Sliced avocado

  • Mexican crema

Instructions

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes. Drain and mash until smooth.

  2. Let the mashed potatoes cool slightly, then mix in the cheese (if using), egg, flour, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

  3. With clean hands, form the mixture into small patties (about 2–3 inches wide).

  4. Lightly coat each patty with flour for a crispier finish.

  5. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the patties in batches for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.

  6. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  7. Serve warm with salsa, crema, or your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • You can add chopped cilantro, green onions, or even cooked veggies into the potato mix for extra flavor.

  • For a dairy-free version, skip the cheese and add more seasoning.

  • Leftovers reheat beautifully in a skillet or air fryer.
