Description
The Torta de Jamón is a classic Mexican sandwich that combines savory ham, creamy avocado, melty cheese, and crisp veggies on a soft bolillo roll. It’s simple, delicious, and satisfying — a street food favorite that you can easily make at home in minutes.
Ingredients
-
4 bolillo rolls (or telera rolls, or sub rolls)
-
8-12 slices deli ham (your favorite style: smoked, honey, or cooked)
-
4 slices of cheese (queso Oaxaca, mozzarella, or Monterey Jack)
-
1 avocado, sliced or mashed
-
1 tomato, thinly sliced
-
1/2 small onion, thinly sliced
-
Shredded lettuce (optional)
-
Pickled jalapeños (optional, for heat)
-
Mayonnaise or refried beans (for spreading)
-
Butter or oil (for toasting the bread)
Instructions
-
Slice the bolillo rolls in half lengthwise. Optional: Lightly butter the inside of each roll.
-
Toast the bread on a griddle or skillet until golden and slightly crisp.
-
In a separate pan, warm the ham slices just until heated through.
-
To assemble, spread mayo or refried beans on one or both sides of the bread.
-
Layer with warm ham, cheese, avocado, tomato, onion, and lettuce.
-
Add pickled jalapeños for extra kick, if desired.
-
Close the sandwich and press gently. Serve warm.
Notes
-
For extra melty cheese, place the ham and cheese together on a skillet for a minute or two before adding to the sandwich.
-
You can swap ham for turkey, chicken, or even milanesa (breaded meat) for a variation.
-
Great served with a side of chips, fruit, or a cold soda.
