For the Cookies:
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Gel food coloring (assorted colors: red, blue, yellow, green, etc.)
For Optional Glaze (Optional):
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Gel food coloring (optional for a colorful drizzle)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Divide and Color the Dough:
- Divide the dough into 4–6 equal portions (depending on how many colors you want).
- Add a small amount of gel food coloring to each portion, kneading until the color is evenly distributed.
- Create the Tie Dye Effect:
- Pinch off small pieces of each colored dough and press them together randomly. Roll the combined dough into a ball, then roll it out gently to swirl the colors together. Avoid overmixing to keep the tie dye effect.
- Use cookie cutters or a knife to cut out shapes or leave as swirled rounds.
- Bake the Cookies:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Place the shaped cookies on the prepared baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges are set but not browned. Let cool completely on a wire rack.
- Optional Glaze:
- Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Divide the glaze into small bowls and add gel food coloring as desired. Drizzle or brush the glaze over cooled cookies for extra flair.
Notes
- Gel food coloring works best as it provides vibrant colors without altering the dough’s texture.
- Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
- Customize the colors for holidays or special occasions (e.g., red, white, and blue for Independence Day).
