- 1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 3/4 cup (180 ml) warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- 1/4 cup (60 g) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
For the Orange Filling:
- 1/3 cup (75 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons orange zest (from about 2 oranges)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
For the Orange Glaze:
- 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- 1/2 teaspoon orange zest
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes, until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes, or in a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
2. Make the Orange Filling:
- In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, sugar, orange zest, and cinnamon (if using) into a smooth paste.
3. Assemble the Rolls:
- Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a 12×16-inch rectangle.
- Spread the orange filling evenly over the dough.
- Starting from the long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Slice into 12 equal rolls and place them in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
4. Second Rise:
- Cover the rolls with a clean towel and let rise for 30–40 minutes, or until puffed.
5. Bake the Rolls:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool slightly.
6. Make the Orange Glaze:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more orange juice for a thinner consistency.
7. Glaze and Serve:
- Drizzle the orange glaze over the warm rolls. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- For an extra citrusy flavor, sprinkle additional orange zest over the glaze.
- These rolls can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerated for up to 5 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven for a fresh taste.
- Freeze unbaked rolls after the second rise, and bake from frozen, adding 5–7 minutes to the baking time.
