Scale
- 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast or instant yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F / 45°C)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
For Brushing:
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- Flaky sea salt (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- Activate the yeast – In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy. (Skip this step if using instant yeast.)
- Mix the dough – In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
- Knead – Knead by hand for 8-10 minutes or with a dough hook for 5-6 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Step 2: First Rise
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
Step 3: Shape the Rolls
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 12-15 equal pieces. Shape into smooth balls and place them in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Cover and let rise again for 30-45 minutes, until puffy.
Step 4: Bake & Serve
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush rolls with melted butter and bake for 18-20 minutes, until golden brown.
- Remove from oven and brush with more melted butter. Sprinkle with flaky salt if desired.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- For extra soft rolls, use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour.
- Want a richer flavor? Substitute half the milk with buttermilk.
- Make-ahead option: Refrigerate dough after shaping for up to 24 hours, then bake as directed.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
