Scale
- 1 1/2 lbs (680g) ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 cup (240ml) ketchup
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 8 slices frozen Texas toast garlic bread (or homemade)
- 1 cup (100g) shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
- Cook the Beef Mixture:
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spatula, for 5-7 minutes, or until browned.
- Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic. Cook for another 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.
- Make the Sloppy Joe Sauce:
- Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and black pepper.
- Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
- Prepare the Texas Toast:
- Meanwhile, bake the frozen Texas toast according to package instructions (usually 5-7 minutes at 425°F/220°C) until golden brown and crispy.
- Assemble the Sloppy Joes:
- Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto each slice of Texas toast.
- Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top and return to the oven for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
- Serve:
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired, and serve hot.
Notes
- Add spice: Add chopped jalapeños or red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
- Make it cheesy: Use pepper jack cheese for a spicier, gooier version.
- Storage: Store leftover meat mixture in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
