Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 lbs (680g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup (240ml) ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 8 slices frozen Texas toast garlic bread (or homemade)
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  • Cook the Beef Mixture:
    • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spatula, for 5-7 minutes, or until browned.
    • Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic. Cook for another 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.
  • Make the Sloppy Joe Sauce:
    • Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and black pepper.
    • Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
  • Prepare the Texas Toast:
    • Meanwhile, bake the frozen Texas toast according to package instructions (usually 5-7 minutes at 425°F/220°C) until golden brown and crispy.
  • Assemble the Sloppy Joes:
    • Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto each slice of Texas toast.
    • Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top and return to the oven for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
  • Serve:
    • Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Add spice: Add chopped jalapeños or red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
  • Make it cheesy: Use pepper jack cheese for a spicier, gooier version.
  • Storage: Store leftover meat mixture in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
