Scale
- 1 medium head cauliflower, cut into florets
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for baking or frying)
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)
- 2 green onions, sliced (optional)
- For the Sauce:
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
- 1 clove garlic, minced
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, salt, garlic powder, and water to form a smooth batter.
- Dip each cauliflower floret into the batter, shake off excess, and place on the baking sheet.
- Lightly brush or spray with oil and bake for 25–30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
- Meanwhile, prepare the sauce: In a saucepan, combine rice vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce, brown sugar, and garlic. Bring to a simmer.
- Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for 1–2 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat.
- Once the cauliflower is done, transfer it to a large bowl and pour the sauce over. Toss to coat evenly.
- Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions, if using. Serve immediately over rice or as an appetizer.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, air fry or deep fry the cauliflower instead of baking.
- Use gluten-free flour and tamari to make this gluten-free.
- Serve with steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.
