Description

Sweet Potato and Apple Casserole is a comforting, wholesome dish that layers tender sweet potatoes and tart apples with warm spices and a crunchy topping, perfect for holiday meals or cozy dinners.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 3 large apples (such as Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Boil sweet potato slices in a large pot of water until just tender, about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, gently toss apple slices with cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Layer half of the sweet potatoes in the prepared baking dish, followed by half of the apples. Repeat the layers.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar, granulated sugar, melted butter, and vanilla extract until combined.
  6. Pour the sugar-butter mixture evenly over the sweet potatoes and apples.
  7. Sprinkle chopped pecans on top.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until bubbly and lightly golden.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for more flavor depth.
  • For added richness, sprinkle mini marshmallows on top during the last 5 minutes of baking.
  • Can be made a day ahead and reheated before serving.
  • Add a pinch of ginger for an extra warming spice.
