Ingredients

Scale

For the garlic toast:

  • 4 slices of thick-cut bread (French bread or Texas toast works best)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)

For the steak:

  • 300 g (1012 oz) ribeye, sirloin, or flank steak
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional, for extra depth)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the topping:

  • 1 cup (100 g) shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup (50 g) shredded cheddar cheese (or provolone, for a meltier finish)
  • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)

For garnish (optional):

  • Fresh parsley, chopped
  • Red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the garlic toast:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, minced garlic, garlic powder, and chopped parsley.
    • Spread the garlic butter evenly over one side of each bread slice. Place the bread on a baking sheet, buttered side up.
    • Bake for 6–8 minutes or until the edges are golden and crispy. Set aside.
  2. Cook the steak:
    • Season the steak generously with salt and black pepper on both sides.
    • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil and butter.
    • Once hot, add the steak and cook for 3–4 minutes per side for medium-rare, or until your desired doneness. Add Worcestershire sauce in the last minute for extra flavor.
    • Remove the steak from the skillet, let it rest for 5 minutes, then slice it thinly against the grain.
  3. Prepare the toppings (optional):
    • In the same skillet, sauté the onions and green bell pepper for 3–4 minutes until soft and slightly caramelized.
  4. Assemble the garlic toast:
    • Top each slice of garlic toast with a layer of the sliced steak.
    • Add a mixture of mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top of the steak. If using sautéed onions and peppers, layer them over the cheese.
  5. Melt the cheese:
    • Place the assembled toasts back in the oven and broil on high for 2–3 minutes or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
  6. Serve:
    • Remove from the oven and garnish with freshly chopped parsley and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes if desired.
    • Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • Bread choice: Use sturdy bread like French baguette, ciabatta, or Texas toast to hold up the steak and cheese.
  • Steak tips: Letting the steak rest after cooking helps keep it juicy and tender when sliced.
  • Cheese options: Mix up the cheeses! Provolone, Swiss, or Monterey Jack are great alternatives for a rich, melty texture.
  • Add-ins: You can customize the toppings by adding mushrooms, jalapeños, or even a drizzle of steak sauce.
