Description

Sloppy Joe Casserole is a hearty, family-friendly dish featuring seasoned ground beef in a tangy tomato sauce, topped with cheese and baked with a layer of biscuits or cornbread for a comforting twist on the classic sandwich.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough or 1 batch prepared cornbread batter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook ground beef, onion, and bell pepper over medium heat until beef is browned and vegetables are soft. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
  4. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  5. Pour the meat mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the top.
  6. Arrange biscuit dough or pour cornbread batter evenly over the top of the meat mixture.
  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the biscuit topping is golden and cooked through.
  8. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Use ground turkey for a lighter version.
  • Great make-ahead option—assemble and refrigerate until ready to bake.
  • Serve with a side salad or steamed veggies for a complete meal.
