Scale
- 2 cups (480ml) whole milk
- 1/2 cup (85g) dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher), finely chopped
- 2 tbsp (15g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp (25g) granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 tbsp (8g) cornstarch
- Pinch of salt
- Whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or marshmallows (for topping, optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the cornstarch mixture:
- In a small bowl, whisk 2 tablespoons of milk with the cornstarch until smooth. Set aside.
- Heat the milk:
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, warm the remaining milk until it begins to steam, but do not let it boil.
- Mix the cocoa powder and sugar:
- Whisk in the cocoa powder, sugar, and a pinch of salt, stirring until completely dissolved.
- Add the chocolate and thicken:
- Reduce the heat to low and add the chopped dark chocolate. Stir continuously until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
- Slowly pour in the cornstarch mixture, whisking constantly. Continue to cook over low heat for 2-3 minutes, or until the hot chocolate thickens to your desired consistency.
- Serve:
- Pour the thick hot chocolate into mugs and top with whipped cream, marshmallows, or chocolate shavings for an extra indulgent treat.
Notes
- For an even thicker consistency, use 1.5 tablespoons of cornstarch.
- Add a splash of vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon for additional flavor.
- Use almond milk or oat milk for a dairy-free version.
