Description

This Thick Italian Hot Chocolate is a decadent treat, rich and creamy with an intense chocolate flavor. Made with high-quality chocolate, milk, and a touch of cornstarch for a velvety thickness, it’s the perfect indulgence for chilly days or festive evenings.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups (480ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 cup (85g) dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher), finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp (15g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp (25g) granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tbsp (8g) cornstarch
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or marshmallows (for topping, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cornstarch mixture:
    • In a small bowl, whisk 2 tablespoons of milk with the cornstarch until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Heat the milk:
    • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, warm the remaining milk until it begins to steam, but do not let it boil.
  3. Mix the cocoa powder and sugar:
    • Whisk in the cocoa powder, sugar, and a pinch of salt, stirring until completely dissolved.
  4. Add the chocolate and thicken:
    • Reduce the heat to low and add the chopped dark chocolate. Stir continuously until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
    • Slowly pour in the cornstarch mixture, whisking constantly. Continue to cook over low heat for 2-3 minutes, or until the hot chocolate thickens to your desired consistency.
  5. Serve:
    • Pour the thick hot chocolate into mugs and top with whipped cream, marshmallows, or chocolate shavings for an extra indulgent treat.

Notes

  • For an even thicker consistency, use 1.5 tablespoons of cornstarch.
  • Add a splash of vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon for additional flavor.
  • Use almond milk or oat milk for a dairy-free version.
