Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced (white or cremini)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for thickening)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Salisbury Steaks

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Mix gently until just combined, then shape into 4 oval patties.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned. Remove and set aside (they will finish cooking in the gravy).

Step 2: Make the Mushroom Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Add onion and cook for 2-3 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in mushrooms and cook for 5 more minutes, until browned.
  4. Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and Dijon mustard. Stir and bring to a simmer.
  5. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch with water, then stir into the gravy to thicken.
  6. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Step 3: Simmer & Serve

  1. Return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet, coating them in the gravy.
  2. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.
  3. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Notes

  • Use ground turkey for a lighter version.
  • Swap breadcrumbs for crushed crackers if needed.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
