- 1 lb ground beef or lamb
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground allspice
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1/4 cup chopped parsley
- 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese (optional)
- 8 sheets phyllo dough, thawed
- 1/4 cup melted butter or olive oil (for brushing)
- 1 egg, beaten (optional, for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish or pie pan.
- In a skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and sauté onion and garlic until soft, about 3–4 minutes.
- Add ground meat and cook until browned. Stir in cinnamon, allspice, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat and mix in parsley and feta, if using. Let cool slightly.
- Lay 4 phyllo sheets in the prepared dish, brushing each layer with melted butter or oil.
- Spread meat mixture evenly over the phyllo base.
- Top with remaining 4 phyllo sheets, brushing each with butter or oil. Tuck in the edges.
- Brush top with egg wash if desired. Score the top with a knife for easier slicing.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes or until golden and crispy. Let cool for 5 minutes before slicing.
Notes
- Keep phyllo covered with a damp towel while working to prevent drying out.
- Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
- Serve with a side salad or yogurt sauce for a complete meal.
