Description
This Philly Cheesesteak recipe features thinly sliced beef, sautéed onions, and melted cheese stuffed into a soft hoagie roll — a delicious taste of Philadelphia’s iconic sandwich.

- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 pound ribeye steak, thinly sliced
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 4 slices provolone cheese (or Cheez Whiz for traditional style)
- 2 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional)
Instructions
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add sliced onions (and peppers if using) and sauté until soft and slightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced steak, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned, about 3-4 minutes.
- Return the onion and pepper mixture to the skillet and mix with the beef.
- Place provolone slices over the meat and let melt. Stir gently to combine.
- Split the hoagie rolls and optionally spread with mayonnaise.
- Spoon the meat and cheese mixture into the rolls and serve hot.
Notes
- Freeze steak for 30 minutes before slicing for thinner pieces.
- Cheez Whiz is the classic choice, but provolone or American cheese are also popular.
- Add mushrooms for a tasty variation.
