Description

This Philly Cheesesteak recipe features thinly sliced beef, sautéed onions, and melted cheese stuffed into a soft hoagie roll — a delicious taste of Philadelphia’s iconic sandwich.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ribeye steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or Cheez Whiz for traditional style)
  • 2 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add sliced onions (and peppers if using) and sauté until soft and slightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the sliced steak, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Return the onion and pepper mixture to the skillet and mix with the beef.
  5. Place provolone slices over the meat and let melt. Stir gently to combine.
  6. Split the hoagie rolls and optionally spread with mayonnaise.
  7. Spoon the meat and cheese mixture into the rolls and serve hot.

Notes

  • Freeze steak for 30 minutes before slicing for thinner pieces.
  • Cheez Whiz is the classic choice, but provolone or American cheese are also popular.
  • Add mushrooms for a tasty variation.
