Description

A festive and vibrant American Flag Cake perfect for celebrating the 4th of July, featuring layers of moist vanilla cake, whipped cream frosting, and fresh berries arranged to resemble the flag.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1 1/2 cups blueberries
  • 3 cups sliced strawberries

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Mix in vanilla extract.
  5. Alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with flour mixture.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Let the cake cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  8. Beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
  9. Spread whipped cream evenly over the cooled cake.
  10. Arrange blueberries in the top left corner to represent the stars.
  11. Create stripes using rows of sliced strawberries.
  12. Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Notes

  • You can use store-bought whipped topping to save time.
  • For a stronger berry flavor, brush the cake with a berry syrup before frosting.
  • Decorate just before serving to keep fruit looking fresh.
