Description

Overnight French Toast Casserole is a make-ahead breakfast dish featuring layers of soft bread soaked in a rich, cinnamon-spiced custard and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • Powdered sugar and maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and place the cubed bread evenly inside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined.
  3. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, gently pressing down to ensure all pieces are soaked.
  4. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the refrigerator while the oven preheats.
  6. Sprinkle chopped pecans over the top if using.
  7. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the casserole is set and the top is golden brown.
  8. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before dusting with powdered sugar and serving with maple syrup.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for the best texture.
  • Customize with fruits like blueberries or sliced bananas before baking.
  • Cover loosely with foil if the top is browning too quickly.
