Ingredients

Scale

For the Filling:

  • 67 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour (to thicken)

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cubed butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
  • Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  • Let the apple crisp cool for a few minutes, then serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • For a variation, add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts) to the topping for extra crunch.
  • This recipe can be made with other fruits like pears or berries, or a combination of apples and berries.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
