Description

Monte Cristo Casserole is a baked version of the classic sandwich featuring layers of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese between slices of bread, soaked in a savory custard and baked until golden, then dusted with powdered sugar and served with jam.


Ingredients

  • 8 slices white bread
  • 6 slices deli ham
  • 6 slices deli turkey
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Raspberry or strawberry jam, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Layer 4 slices of bread on the bottom of the dish. Top with ham, turkey, cheese, then remaining bread slices.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper.
  4. Pour egg mixture evenly over the bread layers. Press gently to help bread absorb the custard.
  5. Brush melted butter over the top layer of bread.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 10-15 minutes until top is golden and center is set.
  7. Let cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with jam on the side.

Notes

  • Can be assembled the night before and baked in the morning.
  • Use challah or brioche bread for a richer flavor.
  • Serve with a side salad or fruit for a complete meal.
