Ingredients
Units
Scale
- 4 large apples (such as Granny Smith or Fuji), peeled, cored, and diced
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
- 2 tbsp fresh mint leaves, finely chopped
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine diced apples, water, sugar, and lemon juice.
- Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Cover and cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples are soft and breaking down.
- If you prefer a smoother sauce, mash with a potato masher or blend briefly with an immersion blender. Leave some chunks for texture, if desired.
- Stir in honey or maple syrup, if using, and chopped mint. Cook for an additional 1–2 minutes to let flavors meld.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Taste and adjust sweetness or mint as needed.
- Serve warm or chilled. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
Notes
- Use tart apples (like Granny Smith) for a tangy flavor, or sweeter varieties (like Fuji) for a milder result.
- Chop mint finely or tear leaves so it distributes evenly without large pieces.
- Reduce sugar if your apples are very sweet; honey or maple syrup adds natural depth.
- If you don’t have fresh mint, substitute with 1 tsp dried mint added at the end of cooking.
- Great served with roast pork, grilled chicken, yogurt, oatmeal, or even cheesecake.
