Description

This creamy and flavorful cheese dip is just like the one you get at your favorite Mexican restaurant! Made with real cheese and a few simple ingredients, it’s perfect for dipping tortilla chips or drizzling over nachos and burritos.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb white American cheese, shredded or cubed (see Notes)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (plus more for thinning)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 small jalapeño, finely diced (optional for heat)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 (4 oz) can diced green chilies, undrained
  • 1 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  • Melt the Cheese:
In a medium saucepan, combine the white American cheese, milk, and heavy cream. Heat over low heat, stirring frequently, until the cheese is fully melted and smooth.

  • Add Flavorings:
Stir in the diced jalapeño (if using), garlic powder, onion powder, and diced green chilies with their juices. Mix well.

  • Adjust Consistency:
If the dip is too thick, add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches your desired consistency.

  • Finish and Serve:
Stir in the chopped cilantro, if desired, and serve warm with tortilla chips or as a topping for your favorite Mexican dishes.

Notes

  • Cheese Choice: White American cheese is the key to achieving the classic creamy texture. You can find it in the deli section of most grocery stores.
  • Spice Level: For extra spice, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a splash of hot sauce.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, stirring frequently.
