Serves 6-8:
- For the casserole:
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or ground turkey
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
- 6 medium potatoes, thinly sliced (Yukon Gold or Russets work best)
- 1 cup (240 ml) beef or chicken broth
- For the creamy topping:
- 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream or milk
- 1 cup (115 g) shredded cheddar cheese (plus extra for topping)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking dish.
- Cook the meat mixture:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Add the diced onion and garlic, and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in salt, pepper, and paprika. Set aside.
- Prepare the potatoes:
- Thinly slice the potatoes using a mandoline or a sharp knife for even cooking.
- Make the creamy sauce:
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a roux and cook for 1 minute.
- Slowly whisk in the heavy cream or milk and cook until thickened, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese until melted. Add mustard powder if using.
- Assemble the casserole:
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the cooked meat mixture. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and meat.
- Pour the beef or chicken broth evenly over the layers for moisture.
- Drizzle the creamy cheese sauce over the top, spreading it evenly.
- Bake the casserole:
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle extra cheddar cheese on top, and bake uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden.
- Serve:
- Let the casserole cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Pair with a side salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
Notes
- You can add vegetables like peas, carrots, or green beans to the meat mixture for extra flavor and nutrition.
- For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the meat.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
