- 1/2 tsp baking powder

- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)

Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
- In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using); mix until combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Scoop tablespoon-sized balls of dough and roll them in patriotic sprinkles or decorating sugar.
- Place cookies 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets and flatten slightly with your hand or the bottom of a glass.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes or until edges are just beginning to brown.
- Let cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
Notes
- Chilling the dough for 30 minutes helps prevent spreading.
