- 1 cup granulated sugar

- Red, white, and blue royal icing or sprinkles for decorating
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until a dough forms.
- Divide dough in half, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
- Use star-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and place them on prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
- Cool completely before decorating with red, white, and blue icing or sprinkles.
Notes
