- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet instant dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
For the Filling:
- 1 cup marinara or pizza sauce (optional, or for dipping)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil or parsley (optional)
- 1/2 lb sliced salami
- 1/2 lb sliced pepperoni
- 1/2 lb sliced ham or prosciutto
For Topping:
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp grated Parmesan (optional)
- Italian seasoning or crushed red pepper flakes, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
-
Make the Dough (skip if using store-bought dough):
- In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Add warm water and olive oil, mixing until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
-
Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
Roll Out the Dough:
- Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle, about 10×14 inches.
-
Assemble the Stromboli:
- Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.
- Sprinkle with half the mozzarella and Parmesan. Layer the meats evenly on top, then sprinkle with remaining cheese and fresh herbs.
-
Roll the Stromboli:
- Starting from a long edge, tightly roll up the dough like a jelly roll. Tuck in the sides as you roll to keep the fillings secure.
- Place seam-side down on the baking sheet. Brush the top with beaten egg and sprinkle with Parmesan and Italian seasoning.
-
Bake:
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool for a few minutes, then slice.
-
Serve: Slice into 1-inch pieces and serve with marinara or pizza sauce for dipping.
