Description

These French Onion Soup Burgers are a delicious twist on the classic soup, combining caramelized onions, melted Gruyère cheese, and seasoned beef patties. Juicy, flavorful, and topped with a savory onion sauce, they’re perfect for elevating your burger game!

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Caramelized Onions

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For the Burger Patties

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

For Assembly

  • 4 brioche buns
  • 4 slices Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise (optional)
  • Fresh thyme or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions:

    • Heat the butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and stir to coat.
    • Sprinkle with sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deep golden brown.
    • Add the beef broth and stir, deglazing the pan. Cook for another 2 minutes until the liquid is absorbed. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Burger Patties:

    • In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Gently form into 4 patties, slightly larger than the buns to account for shrinkage during cooking.
  3. Cook the Burgers:

    • Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 3–4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness (internal temperature of 160°F for well-done).
    • In the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of Gruyère cheese and cover with a lid to melt the cheese.
  4. Toast the Buns:

    • Lightly toast the brioche buns in the same skillet or on a grill for 1–2 minutes until golden.
  5. Assemble the Burgers:

    • Spread Dijon mustard and mayonnaise (if using) on the bottom buns.
    • Place the cheesy burger patty on top, followed by a generous spoonful of caramelized onions.
    • Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley if desired, then top with the other half of the bun.
  6. Serve:

    • Serve immediately with fries, a side salad, or your favorite burger sides.

Notes

  • For an even more authentic French onion flavor, dip the bun tops in a small amount of beef broth before serving.
  • These burgers pair perfectly with a glass of dry white wine or a cold beer.
