- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/4 cup beef broth
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
For the Burger Patties
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
For Assembly
- 4 brioche buns
- 4 slices Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- 2 tbsp Dijon mustard (optional)
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise (optional)
- Fresh thyme or parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
-
Caramelize the Onions:
- Heat the butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and stir to coat.
- Sprinkle with sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deep golden brown.
- Add the beef broth and stir, deglazing the pan. Cook for another 2 minutes until the liquid is absorbed. Remove from heat and set aside.
-
Prepare the Burger Patties:
- In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Gently form into 4 patties, slightly larger than the buns to account for shrinkage during cooking.
-
Cook the Burgers:
- Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 3–4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness (internal temperature of 160°F for well-done).
- In the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of Gruyère cheese and cover with a lid to melt the cheese.
-
Toast the Buns:
- Lightly toast the brioche buns in the same skillet or on a grill for 1–2 minutes until golden.
-
Assemble the Burgers:
- Spread Dijon mustard and mayonnaise (if using) on the bottom buns.
- Place the cheesy burger patty on top, followed by a generous spoonful of caramelized onions.
- Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley if desired, then top with the other half of the bun.
-
Serve:
- Serve immediately with fries, a side salad, or your favorite burger sides.
Notes
- For an even more authentic French onion flavor, dip the bun tops in a small amount of beef broth before serving.
- These burgers pair perfectly with a glass of dry white wine or a cold beer.
