These Irish Soda Bread Scones combine the best of classic soda bread with the ease of tender scones — lightly sweet, studded with raisins, and perfect for breakfast or tea time.

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1/2 cup raisins or currants
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
- Extra buttermilk and coarse sugar, for topping
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the raisins and caraway seeds, if using.
- In a small bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg. Add to the dry ingredients and mix gently until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and pat into a 1-inch thick circle. Cut into 8 wedges and place on prepared baking sheet.
- Brush tops with extra buttermilk and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
- Bake for 15–18 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly and serve warm with butter.
Notes
- Replace raisins with dried cranberries for a twist.
- Serve warm with butter and jam.
- These scones freeze well — reheat in the oven for best texture.
