Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Fries:

  • 2 large russet potatoes (or use frozen fries for a shortcut)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 1 large onion (finely diced)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • 1 tablespoon water (to deglaze the pan)

For the Animal Style Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional, for balance)

For Topping:

  • 4 slices American cheese (or cheddar, for a sharper flavor)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Fries

  1. Peel and cut potatoes into thin fries. Soak in cold water for 30 minutes to remove excess starch. (Skip this step if using frozen fries.)
  2. Drain and pat dry. Toss with vegetable oil, salt, and pepper.
  3. Air Fryer Method: Cook at 400°F (200°C) for 15-18 minutes, shaking halfway.
  4. Oven Method: Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 30 minutes, flipping halfway.
  5. Frying Method: Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and fry in batches for 3-4 minutes, then drain on paper towels.

2. Caramelize the Onions

  1. Heat butter and oil in a pan over medium-low heat.
  2. Add onions and salt, stirring occasionally. Cook for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Stir in sugar (optional) and 1 tablespoon water to deglaze the pan. Set aside.

3. Make the Animal Style Sauce

  1. In a bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, mustard, vinegar, and sugar. Refrigerate until ready to use.

4. Assemble the Animal Style Fries

  1. Place hot fries on a serving plate.
  2. Melt cheese on top by microwaving for 30 seconds or placing under a broiler for 1 minute.
  3. Add caramelized onions and drizzle generously with Animal Style sauce.

5. Serve & Enjoy!

  1. Grab a fork and dig in! Serve immediately for the best texture.

Notes

  • Want extra crispy fries? Double-fry them for extra crunch.
  • Shortcut Version: Use frozen crinkle-cut fries and pre-made caramelized onions.
  • Make it Spicy: Add hot sauce or diced jalapeños to the sauce.
