Description

These Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy are juicy, seasoned beef patties served with a thick, flavorful onion gravy. A simple, satisfying comfort food that pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth (optional for added flavor)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the Hamburger Steaks:

    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Gently mix until just combined.
    • Form the mixture into 4 oval patties.
  2. Cook the Steaks:

    • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy:

    • In the same skillet, add sliced onions. Cook over medium heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and golden.
    • Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir, cooking for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
    • Slowly pour in the beef broth (and chicken broth if using), stirring constantly. Add Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, until thickened.
  4. Combine and Simmer:

    • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Spoon some gravy over the top of each steak. Cover and simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the steaks are cooked through.
  5. Serve:

    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles, and garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Add Mushrooms: Sauté sliced mushrooms with the onions for a richer gravy.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat on the stove.
