Scale
For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend works best)
- 1/4 cup (30g) breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
For the Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups (480ml) beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender.
- Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
2. Cook the Hamburger Steaks:
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly grease with a drizzle of oil or butter.
- Cook the patties for 3–4 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove the patties and set aside (they will finish cooking in the gravy).
3. Make the Gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to coat. Cook for 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
4. Combine and Simmer:
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10–12 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked (internal temperature of 160°F/71°C) and the gravy thickens.
5. Serve:
- Serve the hamburger steaks hot, smothered in gravy, alongside mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add sliced mushrooms to the gravy along with the onions.
- This recipe can be made ahead and reheated gently on the stovetop.
- Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
