Description

Guava pastelitos are a popular Cuban pastry made with flaky puff pastry and sweet guava paste, often paired with cream cheese, making them a delicious treat for breakfast or dessert.


Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 oz guava paste, sliced
  • 4 oz cream cheese, sliced (optional)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar (for sprinkling)
  • All-purpose flour, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry and cut into 6 equal rectangles.
  3. Place a slice of guava paste (and cream cheese if using) in the center of 3 rectangles.
  4. Top with the remaining pastry rectangles and press edges to seal. Crimp with a fork.
  5. Place on the baking sheet, brush tops with egg wash, and sprinkle with sugar.
  6. Cut a small slit in each to allow steam to escape.
  7. Bake for 15–18 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
  8. Cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For a sweeter finish, dust with powdered sugar after baking.
  • Guava paste is available in most Latin or international grocery stores.
  • You can freeze unbaked pastelitos and bake straight from frozen, adding a few extra minutes.
