Description
Guava pastelitos are a popular Cuban pastry made with flaky puff pastry and sweet guava paste, often paired with cream cheese, making them a delicious treat for breakfast or dessert.

- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 4 oz guava paste, sliced
- 4 oz cream cheese, sliced (optional)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar (for sprinkling)
- All-purpose flour, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry and cut into 6 equal rectangles.
- Place a slice of guava paste (and cream cheese if using) in the center of 3 rectangles.
- Top with the remaining pastry rectangles and press edges to seal. Crimp with a fork.
- Place on the baking sheet, brush tops with egg wash, and sprinkle with sugar.
- Cut a small slit in each to allow steam to escape.
- Bake for 15–18 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
- Cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- For a sweeter finish, dust with powdered sugar after baking.
- Guava paste is available in most Latin or international grocery stores.
- You can freeze unbaked pastelitos and bake straight from frozen, adding a few extra minutes.
