For the beef and gravy:
- 1 pound (450 g) ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups (360 ml) beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional, for extra flavor)
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for richness)
For the mashed potatoes:
- 2 pounds (900 g) potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russets)
- 1/4 cup (60 g) unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) milk (or more, as needed)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the mashed potatoes:
- Peel and cut the potatoes into chunks. Place them in a large pot, cover with water, and add a pinch of salt.
- Bring to a boil and cook for 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender. Drain and return them to the pot.
- Mash the potatoes with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if needed. Cover and set aside.
- Cook the ground beef:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned and crumbled. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes, until softened and fragrant.
- Make the gravy:
- Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir to coat evenly. Cook for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring, ensuring no lumps form.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce (if using), onion powder, paprika, and butter. Simmer for 5–7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Assemble the dish:
- Spoon the mashed potatoes onto plates or bowls. Ladle the ground beef and gravy mixture over the top.
- Serve:
- Garnish with chopped parsley or a sprinkle of paprika, if desired. Serve hot.
Notes
- For added flavor, mix in sautéed mushrooms or peas with the ground beef.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the microwave or on the stovetop.
- If you prefer a smoother gravy, blend the onion and garlic into the broth before adding it to the beef.
