Description

This easy Grits Recipe makes creamy, buttery grits that are smooth and comforting — perfect as a classic Southern breakfast side or topped with shrimp, cheese, or veggies.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 4 cups water (or 3 cups water + 1 cup milk for creamier grits)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted vegan butter (or regular butter)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (optional)
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Bring water (and milk, if using) and salt to a boil in a medium saucepan.
  2. Slowly whisk in the grits, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
  3. Reduce heat to low and cover. Cook for 20–25 minutes, stirring frequently, until grits are thick and tender.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in butter until melted. Add cheese, if using, and stir until smooth.
  5. Season with black pepper and more salt if needed. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra creamy grits, use all milk instead of water.
  • Top with sautéed shrimp, bacon, or roasted veggies for a hearty meal.
  • Leftover grits can be stored in the fridge and reheated with a splash of milk or water.
