Description

This Grandma’s Perfect Homemade Bread recipe is soft, fluffy, and golden brown with a slightly chewy crust. It’s perfect for sandwiches, toast, or just slathering with butter. Made with simple ingredients, this timeless classic is a must-have for any kitchen!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F or 45°C)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose or bread flour (plus extra for kneading)

Instructions

1. Activate the Yeast:

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar.
  2. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes, until foamy (this means the yeast is active).

2. Make the Dough:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine melted butter, salt, and yeast mixture.
  2. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a dough forms.

3. Knead the Dough:

  1. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  2. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

4. Shape & Second Rise:

  1. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  2. Place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan, cover, and let rise again for 30-45 minutes.

5. Bake the Bread:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.

6. Cool & Serve:

  1. Let the bread cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  2. Slice and enjoy with butter, honey, or jam!
