Description

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (50 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup (240 ml) hot water or brewed coffee (enhances chocolate flavor)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) buttermilk (or milk + 1 tsp vinegar)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (170 g) chocolate chips or chunks

For the Gooey Chocolate Topping:

  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup (85 g) semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon butter

For Serving:

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Whipped cream
  • Powdered sugar


Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat & Prep

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Lightly grease a 10-12 inch cast iron skillet (or use a 9×13-inch baking dish).

2️⃣ Make the Cake Batter

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter, cocoa powder, and hot water/coffee, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat.
  • In a bowl, whisk sugar, brown sugar, flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add butter mixture, eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  • Fold in chocolate chips for extra gooeyness.

3️⃣ Bake Until Fudgy

  • Pour batter into the prepared skillet.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, until the edges are set but the center is slightly soft.

4️⃣ Make the Gooey Topping

  • Heat heavy cream until warm (not boiling).
  • Pour over chocolate chips and butter, stirring until smooth.
  • Drizzle over the warm cake.

5️⃣ Serve & Enjoy!

  • Let cool for 5-10 minutes, then serve warm with ice cream!
