Description

Crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, these fried mac and cheese balls are a perfect appetizer or snack, made from leftover macaroni and cheese, coated in breadcrumbs, and deep-fried to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 cups cooked macaroni and cheese (cooled)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs (panko preferred)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the cooked macaroni and cheese with shredded cheddar cheese. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Form the mixture into small balls (about 1.5 inches in diameter) and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze for at least 1 hour or until firm.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together eggs and milk. Place flour in a separate bowl and breadcrumbs in another.
  4. Dip each frozen mac and cheese ball into the flour, then the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry the balls in batches for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Ensure the mac and cheese is well chilled or frozen to hold its shape during frying.
  • You can add bits of bacon or jalapeño to the mac and cheese mixture for extra flavor.
  • Use panko breadcrumbs for an extra crispy texture.
