For the apple rings:
- 3 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji)
- 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 large egg
- 3/4 cup (180 ml) milk
- Vegetable oil, for frying
For the coating:
- 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Prepare the apples:
- Peel the apples (optional) and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rounds.
- Use a small round cutter or a paring knife to remove the cores from each apple slice, creating a ring shape.
- Make the batter:
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cinnamon.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and milk. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, whisking until a smooth batter forms.
- Heat the oil:
- Pour about 1–2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep skillet or saucepan. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the apple rings:
- Dip each apple ring into the batter, letting the excess drip off. Carefully lower the coated apple ring into the hot oil.
- Fry 2–3 rings at a time, flipping once, until golden brown on both sides (about 2 minutes per side).
- Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried apple rings to a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
- Coat with cinnamon sugar:
- In a shallow bowl or plate, mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon for the coating.
- While the apple rings are still warm, toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until evenly coated.
- Serve and enjoy:
- Serve the apple rings warm with caramel sauce, whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream for dipping.
Notes
- Apple variety: Granny Smith apples add a tart flavor, while Honeycrisp or Fuji apples are sweeter.
- Make-ahead tip: Prep the apple slices in advance and keep them in cold water with a splash of lemon juice to prevent browning. Pat dry before dipping in the batter.
- Air fryer option: Fry the batter-coated rings at 375°F (190°C) in an air fryer for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway through.
