Description

These French Toast Sticks are crispy on the outside, soft and custardy on the inside, and perfect for dipping! A fun twist on traditional French toast, they’re great for breakfast, brunch, or even a snack. Serve them with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or your favorite toppings.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 slices of thick bread (Texas toast or brioche work best)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)

Optional Toppings/Dips:

  • Maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar
  • Whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread:
    • Cut each slice of bread into 3-4 sticks, depending on the thickness.
  2. Make the custard:
    • In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sugar (if using), and salt until well combined.
  3. Coat the bread sticks:
    • Dip each bread stick into the custard mixture, turning to coat all sides. Let excess custard drip off.
  4. Cook the French toast sticks:
    • Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
    • Add the coated bread sticks in a single layer (work in batches if necessary). Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Repeat with remaining bread sticks, adding more butter as needed.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the French toast sticks warm with your choice of toppings or dipping sauces.

Notes

  • Day-old bread works best as it absorbs the custard without becoming soggy.
  • For a sweeter version, add a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar while the sticks are still hot.
  • To make ahead, freeze cooked French toast sticks in a single layer, then store them in a freezer-safe bag. Reheat in the oven or toaster oven.
