Description

A delicious and easy make-ahead French Toast Bake with a cinnamon-spiced custard and a buttery streusel topping – perfect for breakfast or brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 10 cups)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Butter or cooking spray (for greasing)
  • Streusel Topping:
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup cold butter, cubed

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and place the cubed French bread evenly inside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread. Gently press down to soak all the bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight or for at least 4 hours.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. To make the streusel topping, mix flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Sprinkle the streusel evenly over the soaked bread.
  7. Bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes, or until golden and cooked through.
  8. Let sit for 5–10 minutes before serving. Serve with maple syrup or fresh fruit if desired.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for better texture.
  • You can add chopped nuts or berries for variety.
  • Make ahead and refrigerate for an easy morning meal.
