- 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 10 cups)
- 8 large eggs
- 2 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- Butter or cooking spray (for greasing)
- Streusel Topping:
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 cup cold butter, cubed
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and place the cubed French bread evenly inside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread. Gently press down to soak all the bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight or for at least 4 hours.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- To make the streusel topping, mix flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the streusel evenly over the soaked bread.
- Bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes, or until golden and cooked through.
- Let sit for 5–10 minutes before serving. Serve with maple syrup or fresh fruit if desired.
Notes
- Use slightly stale bread for better texture.
- You can add chopped nuts or berries for variety.
- Make ahead and refrigerate for an easy morning meal.
