Description
This homemade French Onion Dip is rich, creamy, and full of sweet caramelized onion flavor. Made from scratch with sour cream, mayo, and slowly cooked onions, it’s a crowd-pleaser that pairs perfectly with chips, crackers, or veggies.
Ingredients
-
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
-
2 large yellow onions, finely chopped
-
1/2 teaspoon salt
-
1/2 teaspoon sugar
-
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
-
1 cup sour cream
-
1/2 cup mayonnaise
-
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
-
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
-
Salt and pepper to taste
-
Chopped chives (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
-
Caramelize the onions:
In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onions, salt, and sugar. Cook slowly, stirring often, for about 25–30 minutes until the onions are deeply golden and caramelized. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and let cool completely. -
Mix the dip:
In a medium bowl, combine sour cream, mayo, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir in the cooled caramelized onions. Taste and season with salt and pepper. -
Chill and serve:
Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to let the flavors come together. Garnish with chopped chives before serving if desired. Serve with chips, crackers, or fresh veggies.
Notes
-
You can make this up to 3 days in advance—it gets even better over time.
-
Swap in Greek yogurt for the sour cream if you want a lighter version.
-
Want a bit more tang? Add a splash of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice.
