Scale
- 1 cup (240 ml) warm water (about 110°F/45°C)
- 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter (softened) or vegetable oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 cups (360 g) all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy. This indicates the yeast is active.
- Mix the Dough:
- Add the softened butter (or oil) and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, stirring with a wooden spoon or dough hook attachment until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the Dough:
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, knead with a stand mixer using the dough hook on medium speed for 5-6 minutes.
- Let the Dough Rise:
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning to coat all sides. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm, draft-free spot for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Loaf:
- Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan. Cover and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes, or until the dough rises just above the edge of the pan.
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake:
- Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool and Serve:
- Remove the bread from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
Notes
- For a softer crust, brush the top of the loaf with melted butter immediately after baking.
- To ensure the water is at the correct temperature for activating yeast, use a kitchen thermometer.
- This bread can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or frozen for longer storage.
