Scale
- 4 large eggs
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 8 slices thick bread (like brioche or challah)
- 2 tbsp butter, for cooking
- Maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit, for serving
Instructions
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon until well combined.
- Preheat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a bit of butter.
- Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides well but not soaking too long.
- Place dipped bread onto the skillet and cook 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
- Repeat with remaining bread slices, adding more butter as needed.
- Serve warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit.
Notes
- Use day-old bread for the best texture — it soaks up the custard without getting soggy.
- Add a pinch of nutmeg for extra flavor.
- Keep cooked slices warm in a 200°F (95°C) oven if making a large batch.
