Description

These Crunchy Christmas Spiced Biscuits are packed with festive flavors like cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Perfect for holiday gatherings or gifting, these crisp and aromatic biscuits are easy to make and decorate for the season.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup molasses (or golden syrup for a lighter flavor)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Optional Decoration:

  • Royal icing
  • Colored sprinkles or sugar
  • Edible glitter

Instructions

1. Make the Dough:

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar, and molasses until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the egg until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a stiff dough forms.

2. Chill the Dough:

  1. Divide the dough in half, flatten into disks, and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or until firm.

3. Roll and Cut:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness.
  3. Use festive cookie cutters (stars, trees, gingerbread men) to cut out shapes. Place the cutouts on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 1 inch apart.

4. Bake the Biscuits:

  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the biscuits are firm.
  2. Let the biscuits cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

5. Decorate and Serve:

  1. Once cooled, decorate the biscuits with royal icing, sprinkles, or edible glitter for a festive touch.

Notes

  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
  • Make Ahead: The dough can be prepared and refrigerated for up to 3 days before rolling and baking.
  • Flavor Variations: Add a pinch of cardamom for an extra aromatic kick or substitute orange zest for a citrusy twist.
