Description

A slow cooker version of the classic chicken cordon bleu featuring tender chicken breasts layered with ham and Swiss cheese, smothered in a creamy, flavorful sauce for an easy and comforting dinner.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 4 slices of deli ham
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (if using breadcrumbs)

Instructions

  1. Place chicken breasts in the bottom of a greased crockpot.
  2. Top each chicken breast with a slice of ham and a slice of Swiss cheese.
  3. In a bowl, mix together cream of chicken soup, milk, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Pour the sauce evenly over the chicken.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 5–6 hours or on high for 2.5–3 hours, until the chicken is fully cooked and tender.
  6. If using breadcrumbs: In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle over the chicken during the last 30 minutes of cooking. You can also toast the breadcrumb mixture separately and sprinkle it over before serving.
  7. Serve hot with rice, pasta, or steamed vegetables.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, roll the ham and cheese inside the chicken and secure with toothpicks before placing in the crockpot.
  • You can substitute Swiss cheese with provolone or mozzarella.
  • This dish makes great leftovers and reheats well.
  • Add a splash of white wine to the sauce for a gourmet twist.
