Description

Cottage Pie is a comforting British classic made with a savory ground beef filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes, then baked until golden and bubbling.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 3 cups mashed potatoes (prepared in advance)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, and carrots. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
  4. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.
  5. Stir in frozen peas and cook for 2 more minutes.
  6. Transfer beef mixture to a baking dish. Spread mashed potatoes evenly on top.
  7. Dot the top with butter.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or lamb.
  • Make it ahead and refrigerate, then bake when ready to serve.
  • Top with shredded cheese before baking for extra richness.
